1.Ph.D.: Interaction between creative AI and humans

Are you interested in developing creative AI with current machine learning approaches? Would you like to study how people can benefit from working and designing together with an AI machine? If so, then apply for this Ph.D. position at TU/e and join the Human-Technology Interaction (HTI) group.


Job description

Creativity forms the basis for the design of all human artefacts. This Creative AI Machines project aims to research creativity and develop creative AI methods to (a) generate creative design solutions, and (b) emerge and promote creativity in (human) design processes through close interaction between AI and humans. 

Most current"creative"AI simply provides designers with a vast array of ideas. This project develops methods for creative AI interpretation and by using new technologies with respect to neural and Bayesian networks, the"inner world"of AI systems is revealed to the user and can be engaged with. Furthermore you will explore working with design process simulations, and small scale co-bots and fabrication machines engaging in collaborative creative tasks. 

As a PhD researcher from the human technology Interaction group, you will focus on developing new methods for creative interaction and researching how people engage with AI due to these methods. You will strongly collaborate with an Industrial Design PhD researcher on the Creative-AI project, who will focus on researching the design process and the interaction process between AI and humans in a more physical, embodied setting. Your job will be to reflect and capitalize on findings from ongoing studies at the TU/e and HTI on the application of Neural Networks and Bayesian Networks for creative processes. You will develop the methodology for ‘Creative AI’ and investigate the interaction between humans and the AI machine. As a result you will contribute to innovative human-technology interaction in our society. You will publish your findings in top-tier academic journals preferably with a multi-disciplinary audience and proactively disseminate the methodology that you will develop through education, conferences, and workshops.  

The research will be done in a multi-disciplinary approach across the departments of Build Environment (BE), Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS), and Industrial Design (ID). You will become part of the EAISI institute (Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Institute) to join forces in creating AI for the real world. You will receive day-to-day supervision from Sanne Schoenmakers (HTI, IE&IS). And you will work in a team with Kristina Andersen (ID), Herm Hofmeyer (BE), Pieter Pauwels (BE) and Wijnand IJsselsteijn (HTI, IE&IS). 

EAISI  
The Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI) was established in the summer of 2019 as a cross-departmental institute that brings together all AI activities of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). EAISI stimulates, supports, and organizes collaboration between TU/e AI researchers and companies and societal partners. EAISI’s goal is to stimulate multidisciplinary AI research on the combination of three of TU/e’s traditionally strong research domains of Data Science, Humans and Ethics, and Engineering Systems. EAISI aims to develop AI technology for autonomous decision-making in engineering systems that interact with and support humans. Working for EAISI means you are supported in creating new and exciting AI applications with a direct and positive impact on the real world, especially focusing on the application areas of health, mobility and high-tech industry.

  • A MSc degree in artificial intelligence, computer science, software engineering, creative coding, cognitive neuroscience, or a related field, as well as a fascination for machine learning and the human brain.

  • A strong technical background (e.g. in machine learning) and experience with neural networks and/or Bayesian networks are useful for your success and enjoyment in this position.

  • Openness, interest and good soft skills to work closely with people from other disciplines and across organizations and to interact in a friendly way with participants in the research.

  • You will need to have good proficiency in spoken and written English.

  • Interest in teaching and supervision of students

  • You don’t have to fit the requirements exactly, most important is your interest in this research topic and your approach to science. Are you interested in developing and applying new Bayesian methods and neural networks? Do you like to immerse yourself in a challenging programming task? Do you like studying human behavior and interaction with technology? Do you like to puzzle with complex ideas and implement them in code? Do you like to brainstorm with a project team and together test new ideas? If so, then this project might be great for you.

荷兰的4年职位类PhD为全国统一的薪酬标准

Monthly increasing from € 2395 per month in the first year to € 3061 in the fourth year. 【平均下来年薪约合30W+ 】


  • A meaningful job in a dynamic and ambitious university with the possibility to present your work at international conferences.

  • A full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate evaluation (go/no-go) after nine months.

  • To develop your teaching skills, you will spend 10% of your employment on teaching tasks.

  • To support you during your PhD and to prepare you for the rest of your career, you will make a Training and Supervision plan and you will have free access to a personal development program for PhD students (PROOF program).

  • The gross starting salary amounts to €2,395 per month based on a 38-hour working week, and will increase to €3,061 from the fourth year onwards (salary scale P).

  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.

  • The starting date would ideally be October 1st, 2021, but is somewhat flexible.

  • Benefits (such as a pension scheme, pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave) in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Dutch Universities.

  • Should you come from abroad and comply with certain conditions, you can make use of the so-called '30% facility', which permits you not to pay tax on 30% of your salary.

  • A broad package of fringe benefits, including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, and savings schemes.

  • Family-friendly initiatives are in place, such as an international spouse program, and excellent on-campus children day care and sports facilities.

  • You will be part of the TU/e graduate School.

2.Ph.D. position on human-AI collaboration at work


Description

Are you interested in how to successfully integrate AI-systems in organizational processes, to understand when and why users are (un)willing to adopt these systems in their work routines and how we can stimulate its effective usage? This PhD project is part of the AI PLANNER OF THE FUTURE program.

The Human Performance Management (HPM) Group of the School of Industrial Engineering, in collaboration with the Eindhoven Artificial Intelligence Systems Institute (EAISI), is looking for a PhD-student on human-AI collaboration at work (4-years; 1.0 FTE).

The School of Industrial Engineering is one of the longest-established IE Schools in Europe,
with a strong presence in the international research- and education community. Operations Management and Operations Research are at the core of the undergraduate IE program.
The graduate programs (MSc and PhD) in Operations Management & Logistics and in Innovation Management attract top-level students from all over the world. Researchers participate in industrial activities with members of, amongst others, the European Supply Chain Forum.

Human Performance Management (HPM) at TU/e develops scientific knowledge and tests theories that uncover and explain (psychological) processes contributing to performance at the organizational, team and individual level. By examining the ‘people factor’ in operational and innovation processes, HPM aims to ensure that employees can help in bringing organizational strategies to fruition in the most rewarding and efficient way possible.

The Eindhoven AI Systems Institute (EAISI) combines all TU/e Artificial Intelligence activities. Top researchers from various research groups work together to create new and exciting AI methodologies and applications with a direct impact on the real world. TU/e has been active in the field of AI for many years, which gives the new institute an excellent starting position to build upon.

The project
In many organizations and across industries, artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the way
we work. AI-systems are implemented to assist employees with decision making, to decrease workload, or to increase efficiency. Although promising, transforming traditional operations into ones that rely on autonomous systems brings many challenges. For example, when using AI planning systems, users frequently experience difficulties in using and trusting these systems and, as a consequence, deviate from their advice. Prior research highlights the impact of system characteristics (e.g. reliability) on human-AI collaboration. However, these studies disregard the important influence of contextual factors on human-AI collaboration such as organizational climate, various leadership styles or other social and societal features. Therefore, one important challenge concerns the consideration of these different contextual factors when designing and implementing AI-systems at work. To successfully integrate these systems in organizational processes, it is therefore critical to understand when and why users are (un)willing to adopt these systems in their work routines and how we can stimulate its effective usage. The goal of this PhD-project is to address these issues by answering the following research questions:
(1) Which contextual factors (e.g. organizational climate, leadership) and societal factors
(e.g. COVID-19 pandemic), impact planners’ willingness to use AI planning systems?
(2) How can human-centered AI and work design help to improve human-AI collaboration?

We expect you to:

  • further develop the project proposal based on academic literature, and in collaboration with ESCF industry partners

  • design empirical (field) studies

  • design lab/online experiments

  • statistically analyze data obtained from field studies and experiments and report on results

  • communicate practical implications of your research to specific stakeholders/the general public

  • present the findings of your research at (inter)national scientific conferences

  • publish papers in internationally renowned academic journals

  • Recently completed (or be close to completion of) a Master's degree in Work & Organizational Psychology, Management Science, Industrial Engineering, or related fields.

  • Demonstrable experience in conducting empirical and/or experimental research, including knowledge of and demonstrable experience with applying (state of the art) statistical techniques.

  • Excellent mastering of the English language and good communication skills. Note that there is no Dutch language requirement.
